About Urby LEAFS

What is "Urby LEAFS"?

Urby LEAFS is a feature within the Urby app to promote the use of sustainable mobility. The Urby LEAFS show you how sustainable the available mobility options are on a scale of 0 to 5. In addition, sustainable projects are supported within the framework of actions ("Challenges") together with the participating employees ("Community").

What are "LEAFS"?

LEAFS are points you will earn by using sustainable transport or walking via the URBY app.

What are "TREES"?

TREES are another unit in URBY that make the progress of each challenge visible. Several LEAFS make up a TREE. A TREE consists of 10 LEAFS. Within Urby, you can watch your LEAFS grow into a TREE as you collect them.

At the end of each Challenge, we support selected sustainability projects based on the TREES collected by all participants.

What is the difference between "LEAFS" and "TREES"?

LEAFS are your earned points after using resource-efficient transport. Several LEAFS add up to one TREE. All TREES together are used to calculate our contribution to selected sustainability projects. So by collecting TREES, you contribute to the collective goal of a Challenge.

What is a challenge?

A challenge is an action that runs over a fixed period of time and is linked to a fixed goal of how many TREES we want to achieve together. The TREES are collected from the entire community. If the number of TREES specified in the challenge is reached, the challenge is successfully completed and a selected sustainability project is supported.

About the application

How does Urby LEAFS work?

When you get a connection information in Urby, an overview of the mobility offers with their CO2 efficiency is displayed in the form of LEAFS. The ranking of the offers is now sorted according to CO2 emissions. The offer with the lowest CO2 value, which also represents the highest number of collectable LEAFS per route, is in first place.

To participate in a challenge, you have to give your consent once in the Urby app (opt-in). After activating the function, you can actively select your mobility offer ("collect"). Before you set off, you start your booking in Urby AND end it again after arriving at your destination. Once this process has been successfully completed, the LEAFS will be credited to your personal points account in Urby.


After a defined number of LEAFS you receive a TREE. The TREES indicate the progress of the challenge. The points system is only activated during an action.

For each action ("Challenge"), you will be shown a community goal that can be achieved by the participants ("Community") together. You can see your contribution to a challenge in real time in a separate overview.

As soon as a certain number of TREES have been collected by the community, sustainable projects are implemented or supported. After the action, the action elements are reset.

How can I participate?

To participate, you need a smartphone with the Urby app and an Urby account.

At the start of a challenge, your smartphone displays a pop-up screen inviting you to take the challenge. Here you can accept or decline the challenge.

If you initially declined the challenge and decide to join at a later date, you can join the challenge at any time by clicking on the LEAFS icon at the top right of the screen. 

About the LEAFS

How can I collect LEAFS?

In general, you can only collect LEAFS between the properties of the Munich location.


Please also note the following:

​

  • Before the journey, always create a booking via "Collect" and activate it immediately before the start via "Start".

​

  • Always confirm that you have arrived at the end of the path or journey by clicking on "Finish".

​

  • The entries must not be made too long before you start or after you have completed the journey. It is best to always start the booking directly before you leave and finish it as soon as you arrive. 

​

  • The start and destination must always match the dates of your booking in URBY.

​

  • Start and finish must always be further than 400 metres away as the crow flies.

​

  • Footpaths are shown in Urby with a maximum duration of 20 minutes.

​​

  • If you complete multiple bookings in a five-minute period, you will only receive LEAFS for the first completed booking.

How many Leafs do I get for a path?

The number of LEAFS you receive for a distance travelled depends on the means of transport you use.


The more sustainable your means of transport, the more LEAFS you can collect.

Please do not forget to start your booking before you set off and to finish it at the end. Only then will you receive your well-deserved LEAFS.

Why can't I collect LEAFS with my electric car (BEV)?

You can only collect LEAFS for service mobility offers. We only make an exception for walking.

Why can't I collect LEAFS with my bike?

You can only collect LEAFS for service mobility offers, e.g. for BIKE4U. We only make an exception for walking.

Can I add points from past routes?

No, as no route data is stored in the Urby app, routes from the past cannot be added.

What happens to my collected LEAFS

The collected LEAFS become TREES. With these you support the current challenge at that time.

What happens to my LEAFS after I finish the Challenge?

After completing the challenge, all LEAFS and TREES will be used for a selected sustainable project. Therefore, after completing an action, your score will be reset to be ready for the next challenge.

What projects does Urby LEAFS support?

Urby LEAFS supports various projects in the fields of environment and transport. It also supports projects that enhance the immediate working environment (e.g. "green islands") at the Munich location. Exactly which project is being supported can be seen on the challenge screen and on the action website (continue to the campaign).

Where are the trees planted or can I choose where a tree is planted?

In principle, the TREES are used for sustainable projects. This means that TREES collected in the app are not converted 1:1 into trees for a reforestation project. We always select a specific sustainability project for each challenge, which we then support with the campaign. This can include, for example, the greening of BMW locations or public spaces. You can always find out which project your commitment to Urby LEAFS is currently paying towards on the challenge screen and on the campaign website (continue to the campaign).

What do I do if the points are not credited to me?

In the event that the route has not been covered properly or the Urby app suspects abusive behaviour, no LEAFS will be credited.

​

You will receive one of the following error messages:

​

  • No LEAFS collected because start and finish too close (< 400 m): Urby LEAFS are only awarded if the start and finish are at least 400 metres apart as the crow flies.

​

  • No LEAFS collected, as start and target condition not met: You arrived at your destination more than two hours later than planned. 

​

  • No LEAFS collected as booking was cancelled: If a booking is cancelled, you will not receive LEAFS for it.

​

  • 0 LEAFS due to parallel bookings: If you complete multiple bookings in a five-minute period, you will only receive LEAFS for the first completed booking.

Why can't my booking start?

You can only start your booking 15 minutes before departure.

Why do I get an error message when I start or end my booking?

We only use GPS to check whether you are at the starting point or destination. The positioning can take a few seconds. Turn on Wi-Fi to speed up this process.

Will the action cost me anything?

No, joining Urby LEAFS is free of charge. The costs for supporting the sustainability projects are borne by the BMW Group.

Who can join Urby LEAFS?

All employees (incl. "ZAK", "PraDiDo") of the BMW Group are eligible to participate. Please also note the general terms and conditions in URBY, including the item "ACTIONS TO USE SUSTAINABLE MOBILE SERVICES, Urby LEAFS".

Are my routes tracked or saved?

No, the routes are not saved in the Urby app. Only when the booking is started and ended is it checked whether the GPS position of the smartphone matches the specified starting point or destination. After verification, the GPS data is deleted immediately.

Can I also collect LEAFS on private routes?

No, Urby LEAFS can only be collected if the start and destination are at a BMW location.
